How to Turn Past Customers Into Google Reviews That Win New Ones
Share this post
Most small businesses spend their marketing budget chasing new customers, while their best asset sits untouched: the people who have already bought from them. Happy past customers are the fastest route to more Google reviews, and reviews are one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which local businesses appear in the Maps results.
Why reviews matter more than ever
When someone searches for a service "near me", Google shows a small group of businesses on the map. Rankings there depend on how relevant, close and prominent a business is, and prominence is heavily shaped by the number, quality and freshness of its reviews. AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews also draw on reviews when recommending businesses. A steady flow of genuine reviews helps you get found in both places.
Step 1: Make a list of past customers
Go back through the last 12 to 24 months of invoices, bookings or emails. Pick the customers you know had a good experience, since they're the ones most likely to say yes.
Step 2: Reconnect before you ask
Don't open with a review request. Send a short, personal message first: check the work is still going well, share a useful tip, or let them know about something new. Reconnecting first makes the request feel natural rather than transactional.
Step 3: Make it effortless
Copy the "Ask for reviews" link from your Google Business Profile and send it directly. Every extra click loses people, so a single link that opens the review box makes a big difference.
Step 4: Ask for detail, not just stars
Invite customers to mention what you did and where, for example "rewired our kitchen in Solihull". Reviews that mention services and locations help Google understand what you do and where you do it.
Step 5: Reply to every review
Thank people by name and reply to negative reviews calmly and helpfully. Future customers read your replies, and an active profile shows you care.
Step 6: Make it a habit
One burst of reviews fades. Build the request into your routine, a few days after every completed job, so fresh reviews keep arriving month after month.
The ant's path to more customers
None of these steps is complicated, and none of them costs money. Done consistently, they compound: more reviews lead to better visibility, which brings more customers, who leave more reviews. Small, deliberate steps build a business that customers keep coming back to.
