Off-Page SEO in 2026: How Digital PR and Brand Mentions Beat Old-School Link Building
Share this post
I have been building links for clients since the days when a spreadsheet of 200 directory submissions felt like a strategy. It doesn't anymore. As someone who runs a digital marketing agency in Dubai, I watch how search actually behaves in 2026, and the honest truth is that off-page SEO has quietly flipped. The link is no longer the whole story. The mention is.
If you still measure success purely by the number of backlinks you acquired last quarter, this is my attempt to save you budget and frustration.
The data everyone in SEO is talking about
- Digital PR is now the most trusted tactic. In 2026 surveys, roughly 48% of SEO professionals rank digital PR as their most effective link-building method, versus about 16% for guest posting.
- Backlinks are a weak signal for AI search. Ahrefs analysed 75,000 brands and found unlinked brand mentions correlated with Google AI Overview visibility at 0.664, while total backlinks managed just 0.218.
- Mentions drive AI citations. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview appearances; the quartile below averaged fourteen.
A plain text mention of your company, with no hyperlink at all, now correlates about three times more strongly with AI visibility than a backlink does.
Why old-school link building is losing its edge
Traditional link building was built for a search engine that ranked pages by who linked to whom. That still exists, but it is no longer the only judge. The language models behind AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity read the text of the web. They learn what your company is because they have read it, in context, across many credible pages, not because a link sits in a footer.
What digital PR actually looks like
- Original data. Publish a small survey of your market. Journalists link to data they cannot easily produce.
- Expert commentary. A two-sentence quote in a respected outlet beats fifty directory links.
- Local relevance. For UAE brands, mentions in regional business media build authority and geographic context AI models pick up on.
The bottom line
Off-page SEO is not dead; it has grown up. The goal is no longer to collect links like stamps, but to become a name the web keeps repeating in the right context. Build a brand worth mentioning, and the rankings and the AI citations tend to follow.
