LLMO vs SEO: Differences, Overlap and a Website Checklist
Share this post
LLMO helps AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity understand and cite your company, and it builds on the same pages and data as SEO.
LLMO (large language model optimization) is the work of making a company's information easy for assistants built on large language models to find, read and repeat accurately. In the LLMO vs SEO comparison, most of the work overlaps. At Posicionamiento Web, a growth marketing team that works on SEO, GEO, local SEO, ASO and AI automation, we put the work SEO and LLMO share into one plan.
What is LLMO, and how is it different from SEO?
LLMO and SEO share the same foundation: pages that can be crawled and read, clear answers to specific questions, and consistent company details. The main difference is what you measure. SEO tracks rankings and clicks, while LLMO tracks what each assistant answers about a company and which sources it cites.
Search Console shows queries and clicks, but not what an assistant wrote about you. The same question can also get a different answer on another platform or another day, so each answer should be logged with its platform and date. AI search does not make SEO obsolete, because Google's AI Overviews and assistants that search the web draw on pages that search engines can find.
How SEO, GEO, AEO and LLMO differ
SEO works on how search engines find and understand a site. GEO (generative engine optimization) aims for an AI assistant to understand a company and cite it when it answers. AEO (answer engine optimization) targets answer features such as Google's AI Overviews, which summarize a response and link to their sources. LLMO frames the same goal around the language models behind those assistants. All three sit under AI search engine optimization and describe closely related work, so a proposal is better defined by the questions it covers, the platforms it reviews and what it delivers.
An LLMO checklist for your website
- Buyer questions: list what buyers ask about your service, using their words.- Readable pages: service pages that can be crawled and indexed, with a robots.txt that does not block AI crawlers.- Scope and coverage: each page says what is included and which areas you serve.- Consistent details: the same name, address and phone on your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Maps. This is where GEO for small businesses usually starts.- A dated record: what each assistant answers and cites, so you can compare after the changes.
For example, an air conditioning installer that lists Maracaibo and San Francisco (Zulia, Venezuela) as its service areas and explains that a site visit comes before a written quote gives assistants concrete facts to repeat.
How Posicionamiento Web works on LLMO and SEO
Posicionamiento Web focuses on companies in Latin America, especially in Venezuela. The LLMO deliverables are the buyer questions and platforms reviewed, a response log with dates and cited sources, content improvements with verifiable company details, and a follow-up review with the same questions. A dashboard brings together the work completed, search data and contact clicks.
Research relies on Semrush, Ahrefs, Search Console, Google Analytics 4 and Screaming Frog. Team members bring previous experience with brands in automotive, retail, beverages, services, media and business directories. If you are sorting out LLMO vs SEO for your own website, our GEO service page details how we scope the work.
